NAME George BUTFIELD
BORN Abt. 1893
DIED Poss. 1949
MILITARY SERIAL NO. 3771
UNIT 18th Battalion
ENLISTED Lithgow 13 September 1915
DISCHARGED Sydney 24 July 1919

George Butfield had two blocks of land — one was freehold and another was a Conditional Lease. The two blocks totalling 670 acres were at Piper’s Flat in the County of Cook, Parish of Falnash, Lithgow Land District.[1]

He applied for his Advance on 17 May 1920.[2] He requested that his application be given a speedy reply, ‘as he wished to get the timber material for the repairs to his house, as it was not fit to live in’.[3] The sale appears to have been completed by 1 September 1921 as George Butfield was living on the blocks.

It was reported that he was a good type of settler and ‘a practical man on the land’. The Inspector also noted that the land was generally poor and the unimproved part densely timbered and very scrubby.[4]

In 1923 ‘owing to such a disastrous season’ George Butfield was compelled to leave his farm.
