Nellie Alfreda Pike married Charles George Edward John Laffin in England.
Nellie’s gave her address as ‘Parkview’ Hoxton Park, Liverpool. Her block which was a little over six acres was in the County of Cumberland, Parish of Cabramatta, Liverpool. On her application for a loan on 15 April 1921, she stated that she required the loan to assist with stock and equipment for a poultry and pig farm.[1]
On 30 March 1921, she wrote outlining her case.
Having recently purchased a small farm in the above district, I now wish to obtain a loan from Repatriation Department for the purpose of stocking same. I am a returned sister enlisting as Staff nurse N.A. Pike. My husband is managing this place for me.[2]
On 14 April 1921, she was asked to fill in the ‘enclosed form filling in all particulars as to how she proposed to expend the required amount’.[3]
On 28 April 1921, she was informed,
‘I have to state that no applications for assistance in poultry farming outside Group Settlements can be entertained unless the holding was purchased under the Closer Settlement Promotion Act or the applicant is the owner – free of encumbrance – of the farm’.[4]
She did state on her application that the property was mortgaged to the amount of £450.[5]
