A Land Fit for Heroes?

William Leslie Molloy applied for his advance on 12 December 1919. He stated that he required the money to purchase sheep. His land was a Crown Lease No.13/13 of 691 acres with an estimated market value of £1200.  Portion No. 266.  It was in the County of Parry, Parish of Nundle, Land District of Tamworth.[1]

He stated in April 1920, that ‘(he) had inspected sheep and was waiting on the local Repatriation Committee to inspect them’.  They had not done so, and as a consequence ‘the owner has withdrawn the offer’.  He went on ‘I am nearly done out of my intended purchase, through no cause of my own.  This is the reason for my delay in using the advance granted and a very feasible one too’.[2]

On 4 May 1920 however Molloy stated that he had purchased the sheep through a stock agent (410 merino wethers at 30/6 a head).  As payment was to be in seven days, he asked that the payment be expedited.[3]

On 2 June 1923, he stated that he was unable to meet his repayments and asked for an extension of time for six months.  ‘The drought has a serious hold in this district is a drawback to sell stock to advantage or go get money back. [4]

After asking for a small extension of time again, he had repaid the Advance in full by 10 July 1928.
